June 10, 2013

Family and Friends,

I'll be staying another transfer here in Madison with Elder Campbell. I've been in Madison 12 weeks now! The time has flown!

Things are still a-ok for C--------'s baptism. It will be on Saturday at 11:00. The sisters and us are all really excited that we are staying for it. C--- and L-- (her recently reactivated LDS boyfriend) announced their engagement yesterday. We are super excited for them!

Highlight of our week of course was our trip to the temple on Wednesday. For some missionaries that was their last opportunity to see President and Sister Holzapfel. I'll see them at transfers (ZLs go to every transfer meeting now) and at a leadership training meeting two days before he heads out. We are excited for President and Sister Hanks!

We had a successful zone training meeting on Tuesday.

I had great teaching opportunities on exchanges this week. I actually taught more lessons on exchange than with Elder Campbell. I went on exchange with Elder Barker in Guntersville on Tuesday. We taught P---, one of their  investigators. Wednesday after the temple trip we spent a couple hours in Cullman, where we taught C-----. Friday and Saturday we did a "tripanionship exchange" where I went with the Cullman Elders and Elder Campbell went with the Guntersville Elders. I had an AMAZING baptism interview on friday with S----, a husband in a part-member family and who has been coming to church with his family for about a year. Definitly the spiritual highlight of the week (besides the temple) - He has a rock-solid testimony. It really builds my faith when I meet people like him who the Lord has truly prepared.

Hello Family and Friends!

Hope everyone is well. We've had a great, wonderful week.

I realized that I haven't told you anything about Elder Campbell. I always forget to tell yall the most important things. Elder Campbell and I get along really well. He's very musical (President likes to give me musical companions) plays the piano and has composed a lot of his own music.

I don't know if I've mentioned this, but I've had the mission violin with me for about 6 months now. Sisters Wells, Hathenbruck, Elder Campbell and I did a musical number on Thursday at zone conference (My Heavenly Father Loves Me) and Elder Hatch (cellist - Elder Kelley's companion in Greenville), Elder Campbell and I did a musical number on Friday at Mission Leadership Council. It's been a great blessing to have the violin. We've done a lot of musical numbers this last week in lessons  and the music has really added to the spirit of the lessons.

We finally taught E--- this week. Monday we had a lesson with him one-on-one, and then Wednesday the B----s (member family in 3rd ward) invited us to dinner and E--- was there so we taught them. Between the two lessons we taught him the plan of salvation.

We've been working with L--- a lot the last couple weeks. She is a relatively recent convert who is struggling with the recent loss of her mother.  We had a really good lesson with her last night at a member's home.

C-------- is being baptized next weekend! I hope I don't get transferred! Elder Campbell and I taught her the plan of salvation yesterday with her boyfriend's parents, both of whom are strong active members visiting from Arkansas. She was able to recognize the spirit, which is awesome. That (recognizing the spirit) really I think is the key for people investigating the church. Once they recognize the spirit influencing them to follow the path the missionaries and others help lead them on, the conversion process truly starts to take place. We feel really good about June 15th being the right time for her to be baptized.

We had our Madison Zone Conference last Thursday. Our zone had the honor of attending President Holzapfel's last zone conference he will ever conduct as a mission president. The training focused a lot on Chs8 & 9 of Preach My Gospel. Friday was their last Mission Leadership Council. We talked a lot about the mission president transition and how we can make it smoother.

These two meetings were some of the greatest, most spiritual I have ever attended. I admire the Holzapfels so much. They truly lead and teach by example, and I will miss them so much! And even though I will miss them so much, I am very excited for President and Sister Hanks to come. I know that they have been called of God to lead this mission at this specific time

Got the photo with the Holzapfels. Don't have sd card with me today, but I will get it to you.
DO NOT MAIL THE BIRTHDAY PACKAGE TO MADISON

Transfers will be on June 12th (my birthday) and I will be doing a musical number there, which suggests that I may be transferred. I would wait to send it until after we know.

Short letter today. I'm in the process of writing a handwritten letter to y'all. Should send it in the next couple days. It's been a really good week. We were in Athens and Decatur on exchange. We're getting prepped for zone conference on Thursday, and we'll have Mission Leadership Council on Friday.

We taught E--- yesterday. This was the first time Elder Campbell was able to teach him. He is dating a woman in 3rd ward and we are having a meal appointment with them and her family on Wednesday. We are just trying to have more contact with them.

June I think is going to be a really successful month in our zone. We have more than 10 baptism dates set.

Last week we taught a less active (R---) and his catholic wife (W------) the message of the restoration. They were really excited about it. They were out of town for the weekend but we should have a lesson with them later this week.

Thanks for the pictures, I love to see them!

There's a session of the seminar for new mission presidents that will be broadcast church-wide at the end of next month. It's for full-time missionaries and certain stake and ward leaders, but all interested members are also invited. Make sure you get there! It's going to be a good broadcast!

Hello Family and Friends!

Very productive week this last week! Wednesday we had district meeting in Guntersville, then did an exchange with the elders there. I was on exchange with Elder Lebaron, one of our district leaders. We were able to find and teach some african and haitian immigrants at some projects just outside of Guntersville. Two ethiopian investigators came to church Sunday in Guntersville and we are in the process of getting them amharic Book of Mormons and other literature to help them teach themselves, since they speak very little english.

This last week was the week of baptismal dates for our zone! After our exchange in Guntersville we made our way to Cullman. Elder Powell (one of the Cullman elders) and myself went to see C-----, one of their investigators, and committed her to be baptized in June.

In our area we and the sisters have had a lot of success as well. Our wards are so large that sometimes non-members show up at church and we don't hear about it until after the fact. Thursday we had a meal appointment with a recently re-activated member, and his nonmember girlfriend showed up. The sisters were there, so they were able to answer a lot of question. She committed to be baptized yesterday in Gospel Principles. We set a baptismal date with J---, a former investigator, on Saturday; the sisters set a baptismal date with a 15-year old girl named N------ earlier this last week,; and we got a call last night from the zone leaders in Huntsville saying that the sisters in Huntsville found a girl who has been to church now and really wants to be baptized who lives in the Madison 2nd Ward boundaries. We're really excited!

I've run out of time (as usual). Love you all. thanks for everything you do. I pray for you!

I saw the released drawing of the Meridian Idaho ATemple on LDS.org! It's amazing!

Hello Family!

I really enjoyed talking to you on Sunday! I wish we had more time, but I enjoyed the time that I had.

We've been busy this last week. Elder Campbell and I conducted a zone training meeting from 12:30 to 3 on Tuesday, and did an exchange with the Cullman Elders after that. I was with Elder  Van Wagenen (Craig and Tyler's cousin) here in Madison. The assistants came up on Wednesday night and spent Thursday with us. It was a really helpful exchange, both Elder Campbell and I learned a lot. I was with Elder Kaupert (my trainer) and it was really neat to be serving with him again. We (Elder Kaupert and I) went down to Decatur and worked with those elders Thursday. The assistants left Friday Morning.

We had a really neat service experience last night. We (the elders and the sisters) were invited to participate in an end-of-the-year music recital at a senior center for a lady in third ward's piano studio. Elder Campbell did piano, I did violin, and the sisters sang. We got to mingle and uplift a lot of older folks. There also were some potentials in her studio she had wanted us to meet that we were able to get to know.

We had our "Pizza, Polish and Play" zone activity yesterday in Decatur where we waxed all of our mission cars. It went really well.

E---, M------ and D------- were all at church on Sunday. Their schedules have been super busy so we haven't been able to teach them this last week. There's a whole lot of potential and real intent there though.

Well, I pretty much told you everything else when I talked to you. Have a great week!

Hello Family and Friends!

Well, we've had a really busy week. Tuesday Elder Oslapas and Elder Cowan said goodbye to Madison on Tuesday. Because Elder Campbell was becoming my companion, we actually didn't go to the transfer meeting on Wednesday. He drove up here Wednesday morning and Elder Lebaron (his previous companion) drove Elder Oslapas and Elder Cowan to transfers. Elder Oslapas is a zone leader in Birmingham, and Elder Cowan was transferred to the Magnolia Branch (in the Montgomery Stake). Elder Campbell and I spent Wednesday in Huntsville and taught J---- and A-----. I don't think I mentioned them yet (I don't know why) but J---- is a less-active and A----- is a non-member, and they have a couple-month-year-old girl named Skyla. We've set a marriage date for them and a baptism date for A----- later this month! We saw a few other investigators that day as well.

Thursday and Friday we spent in Birmingham for zone leader training and Mission Leadership Council. We probably had close to 10 hours of training altogether. It was a really neat experience, especially to see the sisters very involved. Last Wednesday's transfer was a big transfer, and 9 of the 20 zone leaders at the training were brand new. Elder Hunt and Elder Forbes, both from my MTC District, are zone leaders now too. 4 previous companions (Elder Hunt, Elder Kaupert, Elder Kelley and Elder Oslapas) were at the meetings. Sister Bush and Sister Murray (previous Madison Sisters) were there as Sister Training Leaders.  I could probably talk all day about the training we received. President and Sister Holzapfel just came back from the area mission president's seminar, so they had some training that they received there. President is amazing! Sister Holzapfel, President Phillips and the assistants also gave training. We spent Thursday night in Cahaba Heights with Elders Jensen and Fredrickson. We went out with their branch mission leader and taught some people.

Elder Campbell is from Roseville CA. He came out 6 weeks before me. He went to BYUI before his mission. He's a great missionary and really easy to get along with. I'm excited to work with him.

April 29, 2013

By the way, Happy anniversary! I didn't remember until Tuesday, and since we only go to the store on Mondays I wasn't able to send a card in time. But I did remember! Hope it went well.

Hello Family and Friends!

We got our transfer calls this morning. I will be staying in Madison, and Elder Oslapas and Elder Cowan will be leaving. This transfer went by SO FAST! Both Madison sisters will be leaving as well, so I will be the only Madison missionary staying!

I wanted to start out with more of a spiritual thought than a report of my week. They had a new missionary training meeting this week, and while we didn't attend, we received a summary of what was taught there. A point that President Holzapfel made was "in missionary work, it's definitely ok to be overwhelmed : it drives you to your knees". I thought back on my mission, and I realized that the times I've progressed the most have been the times I've been totally overwhelmed and not felt adequate. In those times I've just had to have faith, do everything I can, and know that God will make up the difference. Prayer is an amazing source of spiritual strength - both on and off the mission.

The South-east area of the church is putting on a YSA conference this summer - it's a really big deal! Missionary work is a big focus, and they are hoping for more than 100 baptisms in the region because of it. The kick-off devotional was last night. President Holzapfel is super-excited about it, and has told us to do whatever we can to assist in the effort.

I will write more next week. ran out of time

Love you!
